Installing a new dishwasher or washing machine looks like a DIY job — connect a hose, plug it in, done. Most of the call-outs we get for these appliances aren’t installs at all, they’re fixing an install someone else did in twenty minutes that’s now leaking into a cabinet or backing up into the sink. Here’s what actually needs to be right.
Dishwasher: Water Supply and Drain Connection
A dishwasher needs its own cold water supply, ideally taken off the cold line under the sink via a proper T-fitting or dedicated valve — not a shared, over-tightened compression fitting jammed onto an existing tap connection, which is one of the more common slow-leak sources we find under kitchen sinks. On the drain side, the dishwasher’s drain hose needs a high loop (secured up near the underside of the countertop before running down to the drain or garbage disposal connection) to stop dirty sink water siphoning back into the dishwasher. Skip the high loop and you’ll eventually get grey water and food particles ending up in a “clean” wash.
Washing Machine: Standpipe Height and Trap
A washing machine drains through a standpipe with a trap, and both the standpipe height and trap depth matter more than most installers realise. Too short a standpipe and water can siphon out during the drain cycle instead of draining properly; no trap (or a trap that’s dried out because the machine isn’t used often) lets sewer gas smell back up into the laundry area. The standpipe also needs to be tall enough — generally at least 900mm — to prevent backflow when the machine’s pump pushes water out under pressure. If your washing machine drain hose is just shoved into a floor drain or an undersized pipe, that’s exactly the setup that floods a laundry or garage the first time the drain is even slightly restricted.
Both Appliances Need Their Own Isolation Valves
Every appliance connection should have its own isolation valve, not a shared shut-off buried behind the appliance that requires pulling it out to reach. When a hose fails at 11pm — and braided supply hoses do fail, usually right at the crimped fitting — being able to shut off that one appliance in seconds without cutting water to the whole kitchen is the difference between a puddle and a flooded kitchen floor overnight.
Check the Existing Pipework Before Assuming a Simple Swap
Replacing an old dishwasher or washing machine with a new one isn’t always a like-for-like swap. Older East Rand homes sometimes have supply lines or drain connections that were adequate for appliances from 15-20 years ago but don’t match modern flow rates or hose fitting standards, and newer appliances are increasingly picky about needing a properly vented drain connection rather than the informal setups common in older installs. Before assuming you can just unplug the old one and plug in the new one, it’s worth having the connection checked — especially if the current setup has never given you trouble specifically because it’s never actually been tested under a full cycle at full pressure.
Signs Your Current Installation Isn’t Right
A few signs worth acting on rather than ignoring: water pooling under the dishwasher after a cycle, a washing machine that occasionally backs up or drains slowly, a persistent damp smell near either appliance’s cabinet, or a standpipe connection that visibly wasn’t professionally cut and fitted. None of these are emergencies yet — but they’re the early warning signs of exactly the kind of slow leak that causes real water damage months down the line, usually discovered when the cabinet or flooring is already ruined.
