What Is a PIRB Compliance Certificate?

If you’ve had plumbing work done in South Africa, particularly geyser installation or replacement, you’ve probably heard of a PIRB compliance certificate — and if you’re selling a property, you’ll almost certainly need one.

What PIRB actually is

PIRB stands for the Plumbing Industry Registration Board. It’s the regulatory body responsible for registering qualified plumbers in South Africa and ensuring plumbing work, especially geyser installations, meets required safety and installation standards.

What the certificate covers

A PIRB Certificate of Compliance (CoC) confirms that a geyser installation or replacement was done according to the SANS 10254 standard — covering things like correct pressure relief valve installation, safe tray and overflow drainage, proper electrical isolation, and secure mounting. It’s issued by a PIRB-registered plumber after the work is inspected and signed off.

Why it matters

• Insurance claims — most South African insurers will not pay out on a geyser-related claim (like a burst tank causing water damage) without a valid CoC on file
• Property sales — a valid geyser CoC is generally required as part of the compliance documentation when selling a home
• Safety — the standard exists because incorrectly installed geysers can genuinely be dangerous, from scalding risk to electrical hazards

Getting one

Only a PIRB-registered plumber can issue a valid certificate. If your geyser was installed or replaced without one, it’s worth arranging an inspection and getting it certified properly, especially before it becomes urgent at claim time or during a property sale.
